I could describe my life as a long, logical series of well-considered decisions... first my parents', and then my own — sometimes wise, sometimes not — which, through errors and lessons learned, laboriously built the Jules writing these lines today.
It's a plausible version, reassuring, flattering, and… one that doesn't convince me.
Because what also built Jules — perhaps even more so —
is the "chance" of improbable and irresistible encounters.
Over billions of years of the universe's evolution before my birth as a human being, the elements that make me up experienced billions of improbable and irresistible encounters, common to all living beings: in the chaos of the Flaring forth, at the heart of supernovas, during the formation of the Earth and the emergence of life, within countless symbioses…
More recently, about 62 years ago, an oh-so-irresistible encounter between one sperm cell, swimming shoulder to shoulder with 40 million other contenders, and a welcoming egg in my mother's womb.
35 years ago, in a small village in the Ecuadorian Andes, faces weathered by cold and sun, proud, kind, irresistible eyes. Farewell to the future already mapped out in Belgium. Back to school to explore the social sciences, and two decades immersed in the life and countless survival strategies of small scale farmers in Latin America and Africa. An extraordinary privilege, a constellation of experiences, boundless gratitude.
12 years ago, during a conference titled "Radical Compassion," a radiant smile — Joanna Macy. A powerful message: no social justice without a shift in consciousness. Back to school again, this time to explore philosophy, cosmology, and consciousness. Meeting a gentle-hearted giant, Brian Swimme, and his new story of the universe.
